Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai is set to be sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) on May 14. His appointment was recommended by the current CJI, Sanjiv Khanna, to the Ministry of Law and Justice. Justice Gavai is presently the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court after CJI Khanna.

Early Life and Education: Born on November 24, 1960, in Amravati, Maharashtra, Justice Gavai began practicing law in 1985. He initially worked under the late Raja S. Bhonsale, a former Advocate General and High Court Judge, before starting his independent practice at the Bombay High Court in 1987.
Legal Expertise: His practice primarily focused on Constitutional and Administrative Law. He represented civic bodies and institutions such as the Nagpur and Amravati Municipal Corporations, Amravati University, and state-owned companies including SICOM and DCVL.
Public Service: In 1992, he was appointed as Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor at the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court. He rose to become Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor in 2000.
Judicial Career: Justice Gavai was elevated to the Bombay High Court as an Additional Judge on November 14, 2003, and became a permanent judge in 2005. He served at multiple benches, including Mumbai, Nagpur, Aurangabad, and Panaji. He was appointed to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019.
Tenure as CJI: He will assume the role of Chief Justice of India on May 14, 2025, and is slated to serve until his retirement on November 23, 2025.
