The security situation in the north-eastern states, Jammu and Kashmir, and Naxal-affected areas has improved over the past eight years, according to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday.

On "Police Commemoration Day," Shah spoke after paying respects to law enforcement officers who had died in the course of duty at the National Police Memorial.

Speaking to the crowd, Shah claimed that in Jammu and Kashmir, persons who formerly threw stones at security forces have evolved into sarpanches.

“Youth earlier involved in throwing stones are now involved in various developmental projects introduced by the government. Under PM Modi’s vision, several measures have been undertaken to strengthen the internal security of the country,” he said.

“In the northeast, we have removed the special powers given to the armed forces (under the AFSPA) and instead, given special powers to the youngsters there, resulting in a decline of violence in these areas by more than 70 per cent," he said

He said, "The national anthem is being performed at Eklavya schools as the national flag flutters on these structures in the states impacted by Left Wing Extremism (LWE)." According to Shah, India is moving forward in terms of development as a result of the sacrifices made by law enforcement and paramilitary troops all around the nation.

The National Police Commemoration Day is held in honour of the 10 members of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) who lost their lives in a Chinese military ambush in the Hot Spring region of Ladakh on this day in 1959. (Agencies)
