India to be world's 2nd largest consumer market by 2030

India is expected to grow 46% by 2030 and become the 2nd largest consumer market, as per Edelweiss Mutual Fund report.

Rising incomes, young workforce and rapid urbanization will drive consumption growth across the country. Consumer spending in India is expected to touch USD 4.3 trillion by 2030 from USD 2.4 trillion in 2024.

This growth is largely driven by India’s growing middle and upper-middle class population who are leading to higher purchasing power and more discretionary spending.

India’s median age of 28 years is much lower than China’s 39 years and US’s 38 years making it a big consumption driver.

By 2030, India’s working age population (15-64 years) will be 100 crore, which will be 20% of the global workforce.

Dependency ratio--which is the proportion of dependents to the working age population--will decline from 47% in 2023 to 31% by 2031 allowing for higher disposable income and more consumer spending.

Women’s participation in the workforce has also seen a significant increase from 23% in 2018 to 42% in 2024.

This increase in dual income households is leading to more spending on lifestyle and premium products and strengthening India’s consumer economy.

Urbanization, digital transformation and financial inclusion are rapidly changing consumption patterns in India. As aspirations converge across urban and rural areas, access to goods and services is converting intent into actual spending.

Also, the country is witnessing two big shifts in consumption: from unbranded to branded and from unorganized to organized retail. This shift is expected to unlock USD 600 billion of additional consumer spending in the coming years.

Urbanization is driving demand for convenience consumption, digitization and new age consumption trends are changing buying behaviour through e-commerce and digital payments.

Also, easy credit is making it easier for consumers to spend on aspirational goods, premiumization--the growing demand for high end and branded products--is the next phase of consumption. All these are building a strong foundation for India’s consumption growth.

Quick commerce is going to grow fast driven by urbanization, rising consumer expectations and faster, localized delivery.

But rural demand for consumer durables is an unexplored opportunity as penetration is low. As rural incomes rise and digital access improves this segment will become a big consumption driver in India.

Above all, India’s per capita income has grown at 8.7% CAGR since 2015 and is leading to more discretionary spending. With shift towards branded products and organized retail India’s consumer market is going to grow big time.
