After two decades, the Thackeray Brothers share Stage

Mumbai, 5 July 2025:

At the NSCI Dome in Worli, cousins Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray made their first public appearance together in almost two decades in a dramatic and politically charged moment.

The historic reunion was planned to commemorate the Maharashtra government's decision to end the contentious three language policy in primary schools, which both leaders strongly opposed. It took place at a "Vijay Sabha" rally called Marathicha Awaaz. Supporters of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Shiv Sena (UBT) cheered enthusiastically during the event, and both leaders made a "grand dramatic entry" on stage while the assembled crowd chanted and lit up their smartphones with torchlights.

Ahead of the municipal elections, the assembly, which was scheduled for July 5th, was viewed as a declaration of unity and a celebration of Marathi identity.

Shiv Sena (UBT) mouthpiece Saamana recently published a picture of the cousins with the headline, "Whatever is in the mind of Maharashtra will happen," adding a symbolic element to the reunion and confirming the public's belief that their alliance is more than just a show. Political analysts predict that the reunion, which was spurred by linguistic and cultural solidarity, could have a big electoral impact, especially in the run up to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections.

Both groups are presenting themselves as defenders of Marathi pride, and many believe that this reconciliation could lead to the emergence of a new political force.

But there are still questions. The problem of leadership hierarchy and trust deficits from previous schisms are major concerns. Unresolved issues from their 2005 split, when Raj left Shiv Sena to form MNS, could resurface and strain future collaboration, according to political observers. Rival parties' reactions have been conflicting, despite possible dangers. The rapprochement has been welcomed by the BJP and Congress, but the Shiv Sena (UBT) has some reservations about completely joining Raj's party.

Mumbai's civic elections will serve as a litmus test for this renewed partnership, according to analysts keeping a close eye on the situation. A strong political narrative centered on regional identity could be delivered by a successful alliance, potentially upending Maharashtra's political system.

High public expectations and deeply held regional sentiments are at risk, so how this reunion turns out as it combines cultural sentiment and electoral strategy will determine Maharashtra's political course in the coming months.
