Although Udaipur city is under curfew, Rajasthan’s annual Rath Yatra is slated to kick off as per the schedule today, Friday, July 1 at 3 pm.
After massive protests erupted in Udaipur over the killing of 47-year-old tailor Kanahiya Lal, a strict curfew was imposed in most of the area of the city.
To make the Rath Yatra possible, the authorities have provided some relaxation along the yatra route, but other parts of the city will continue to remain under curfew. As per the authorities, once the procession is over the curfew will be reimposed in the area.
On Thursday, scores of protestors took to the streets and protested against Kanahiya’s killing. An intense slogan rocked the city, demanding the death penalty for two Muslims who had committed the heinous crime.
In Udaipur, a gathering of more than 4 people has been disallowed and internet service has also been suspended in the city to avoid instigation of further violence.
Police officials have appealed to both Hindu and Muslim communities to maintain peace. The security in the city has also been beefed up as additional police personnel and extra drones have been deployed in sensitive areas.
