Dussehra 2022: Streets in India are filled with revellers

Dussehra, a significant Hindu festival, is being celebrated by millions of Indians as concerns about the Covid-19 outbreak have diminished.

In the past two years, festivities have either been toned down or abandoned entirely. On the tenth day of the seventh lunar month, which roughly corresponds to the months of September and October, Dussehra is observed.

The celebration marks the victory of good over evil by commemorating the Hindu hero Ram's victory over the 10-headed demon king Ravan. India celebrates Dussehra with a variety of ceremonies and events. Songs, dances, and lengthy processions are used to mark celebrations, which extend for several days.

People visit their loved ones and friends, share treats and presents, and dress traditionally. In certain places, like Gujarat, the celebration is preceded by nine nights of dancing (or Navratri), during which participants dress in vibrant clothes and engage in traditional dances using short sticks (dandiyas) and timed clapping.

To symbolise the triumph of good over evil, effigies of Ravan, his brother, and his son are burned on the tenth day. Huge crowds assemble to witness this spectacle, cheering as the effigies are consumed by crackling flames.

Sometimes, people will light firecrackers simultaneously, but in recent years, politicians and environmentalists have urged people not to do so since air pollution is getting worse.

In towns and cities throughout northern India, Ramlila, a theatrical production based on Ram's life is presented. In front of enormous crowds, actors portraying various characters from the Hindu epic Ramayan perform out scenarios.

The festival also celebrates the conclusion of Durga Puja and the killing of the buffalo demon Mahishasur by goddess Durga.

Large crowds are attracted by the spectacular stage displays known as "pandals." These pandals feature artwork inspired by various themes, from politics to significant artworks.

Dussehra also signifies the start of the 20-day-long festival of lights known as Diwali.
