IIM Kolkata Case: Special Investigation Team Intensifies Probe Amid Conflicting Narratives

The case of alleged rape reported at Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIM-C) has acquired new dimensions as Kolkata Police set up a nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) that would look more closely into the matter. The clash is coming on the heels of the top suspect, Mahaveer Toppannavar alias Parmanand Jain, who is still in the police custody and will face another remand until July 19, and conflicting accounts given by some major stakeholders in the case have complicated the investigations.

The fact that the DC Southwest Division has established a special SIT to deal with the case shows how seriously authorities are taking it. Such a step is usually a signal that the investigation needs special skills and coordination between various departments to have a detailed investigation.

The establishment of the SIT is opportune when the case has attracted so much attention and cast doubt over the safety of the campuses at the most prestigious educational places. The team of nine people is supposed to investigate all the backgrounds of the incident such as the security measures invoked in the hostel of IIM-C and the situation under which the alleged assault took place.

In a hearing at the Alipore court on July 12 the police managed to get the extension of their police custody successfully. The Chief Prosecutor Sourin Ghosal pointed out the claims of the victim had the prima facie evidence with medical evidence concurring with the allegations. The magistrate dismissed the argument of the defense that it was a consensual activity, and he ordered to keep it in custody till July 19.

The accused's detention allows investigators more time to gather crucial evidence, interview witnesses, and reconstruct the events of Friday evening when the alleged incident occurred within the boys' hostel premises.

The case has been complicated by starkly different versions of events from those closest to the alleged victim. The woman's father has categorically denied rape allegations, instead claiming his daughter contacted him around 9:40 PM on Friday to report falling from an autorickshaw and losing consciousness. According to him, she was subsequently admitted to SSKM Hospital's neurology department after being rescued by police.

This narrative directly contradicts the official complaint filed at Haridevpur police station, where the woman alleged she was drugged and sexually assaulted after being invited to the hostel for a counseling session. The complainant claimed she became drowsy after consuming pizza and water offered by the accused.

Adding another layer to the controversy, the accused's mother has publicly defended her son, asserting his innocence and character. Such family responses are not uncommon in high-profile cases but highlight the human dimensions of legal proceedings that often get overshadowed by procedural matters.

The contradictory statements have sparked discussions about the complexity of investigating sexual assault cases, particularly when family members present conflicting accounts. Legal experts note that such situations require careful handling to ensure justice while protecting all parties involved.
