OPPOSITION PROTESTS IN RAJYA SABHA OVER VIOLENCE IN MANIPUR

Government Says It Is Taking All Necessary Steps to Control Violence in Manipur

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned again on Tuesday as the opposition demanded an immediate discussion on the violence in Manipur. The opposition members raised slogans and trooped into the Well of the House, demanding a statement from the government.Rule 267 of the Rajya Sabha Rules of Procedure allows a member to move an adjournment motion for the consideration of a matter of urgent public importance. The motion can be moved only after giving 14 days' notice.


The opposition members have been demanding a discussion on the violence in Manipur for the past few days. On Monday, they had staged a walkout from the House after the government refused to discuss the matter.On Tuesday, the opposition members again raised the issue when the House assembled for the day. They demanded that the government make a statement on the violence and take action against those responsible.


The government, however, said that the matter was being investigated and that it would be inappropriate to discuss it in the House at this stage.The opposition members were not satisfied with the government's response and continued to protest. 


The Chairman, M Venkaiah Naidu, then adjourned the House for the day.The violence in Manipur has been on the rise in recent months. In the past few weeks, there have been several incidents of clashes between security forces and armed groups.The opposition has accused the government of failing to take steps to control the violence. They have also demanded a probe into the alleged excesses by security forces.


The government, however, has denied the allegations and said that it is taking all necessary steps to maintain law and order in Manipur.




The violence in Manipur has its roots in the decades-old conflict between the Naga and Kuki tribes. The Nagas are a major ethnic group in Manipur, while the Kukis are a smaller ethnic group. The two groups have been fighting over land and resources for many years.The violence in Manipur has escalated in recent months. In June 2023, there were several clashes between security forces and armed groups. The encounter caused the demise of some people, including noncombatants.


The opposition has demanded that the government take immediate steps to control the violence in Manipur. They have also demanded a probe into the alleged excesses by security forces and has also called for a discussion on the violence in Manipur in the Rajya Sabha. They have argued that the violence is a matter of urgent public importance and that it needs to be discussed in Parliament and has said that it is taking all necessary steps to control the violence in Manipur.
