New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday praised the inclusion of the ‘Maratha Military Landscapes of India’ in the UNESCO World Heritage List. He called it a proud moment for all Indians. This listing includes 12 impressive forts, with 11 in Maharashtra and one in Tamil Nadu.

Sharing his excitement on the social media platform X, the Prime Minister stated, “Every Indian is elated with this recognition.” He highlighted the Maratha Empire's legacy in governance, military strength, cultural pride, and social welfare. “The great rulers inspire us with their refusal to bow to any injustice,” he added.

The newly recognized World Heritage site features iconic forts such as Raigad, Shivneri, Sindhudurg, and Gingee, showcasing the military architecture developed during Maratha rule from the 17th to 19th centuries. These forts symbolize resistance, local engineering, and governance.

PM Modi also urged citizens to visit these forts and connect with the rich history of the Maratha Empire. “I call upon everyone to visit these forts and learn about the rich history of the Maratha Empire,” he said.

In a personal note, the Prime Minister recalled his visit to Raigad Fort in 2014, where he paid tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. “I had the opportunity to bow to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. I will always cherish that visit,” he wrote, sharing photos from the event.

Maratha Military Landscapes of India has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming India’s 44th property to receive this recognition. This global accolade celebrates India’s enduring cultural legacy, showcasing its diverse traditions of architectural brilliance, regional identity, and historical continuity.

The UNESCO listing marks a significant step in recognizing India’s diverse cultural and historical landscape.
