Punjab Suspends 25 Jail Officials Over Corruption

Chandigarh, 28 June 2025:

By suspending 25 jail officials today, the Punjab government has demonstrated its resolve in its ongoing campaign to eradicate corruption and drugs from the State's prison system. The action aims to dismantle illegal networks that operate behind bars and targets high level misconduct.

Three deputy superintendents and two assistant superintendents are among those suspended, demonstrating the seniority of those involved. The widespread suspension represents a daring move to combat drug related offenses and corruption, which have allegedly thrived inside prisons.

According to a spokesman for the state government, the drive comes after solid proof of systemic problems and drug trafficking between prison employees and inmates. The spokesperson went on to say, "This action is expected to significantly improve the functioning of jails and promote a more accountable system." The scandal that is developing is reminiscent of other recent occurrences. The superintendent of Hoshiarpur Central Jail was suspended earlier this year after an internal investigation revealed a drug racket in which senior staff members smuggled drugs and SIM cards into the facility. The Punjab and Haryana High Court is keeping a close eye on that case, calling it "shocking" and sending it to the Anti Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) for a thorough investigation.

Additionally, police discovered well organized drug smuggling networks in the Sangrur and Ropar district jails, which included a head constable, an assistant sub inspector, a deputy superintendent, and multiple prisoners. During these raids, significant amounts of heroin, charas, and other illegal substances were found, along with SIM cards and cell phones. A special investigation team has been established by the Punjab Inspector General of Prisons to look into the recently discovered violations. Transfers, questioning, and evidence recovery will be supervised by the State's Anti Narcotics Task Force in collaboration with local law enforcement.

The crackdown's leader, Punjab's Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has made repeated promises of a zero tolerance policy. He emphasized a month ago that no government official, regardless of rank, would be exempt if found guilty of corruption or drug possession.

The extensive suspensions and ongoing investigations, according to analysts, are part of a larger plan to bring Punjab's prison system back to its former glory. However, they warn that in order to stop recurrence, ongoing attention and structural changes will be necessary.

The government has asked citizens and whistleblowers to keep sharing information as the state moves forward with disciplinary hearings and potential criminal prosecutions. To guarantee that prisons stop functioning as centers of corruption and human trafficking, authorities have demanded strong accountability procedures, staff training, and stricter oversight. This most recent development signals an unyielding position from the highest levels of government and represents a turning point in Punjab's fight against institutional rot.
