SHOPKEEPER OPENS FIRE AT PROTESTER IN PUNJAB

Violence in Manipur Sparks Protests in Punjab

A shopkeeper in Moga, Punjab, opened fire at a protester on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, while the latter was demonstrating against the violence in Manipur. The protester, Gurpreet Singh, was rushed to a hospital in a critical condition.The incident took place in the Sadar Bazaar area of Moga. Singh was part of a group of protesters who were marching against the killing of five civilians by security forces in Manipur's Churachandpur district on July 29.


As the protesters were marching, the shopkeeper, Surjit Singh, came out of his shop and opened fire at them. Singh was hit in the chest and fell to the ground. The shopkeeper then fled the scene.The police have registered a case against the shopkeeper and are on the lookout for him. Gurpreet Singh is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Moga. He is in critical condition.


The incident has sparked outrage in Punjab. The opposition parties have condemned the attack and demanded the arrest of the shopkeeper. The Punjab government has also condemned the attack and ordered a probe into the matter.
