A shopkeeper in Moga, Punjab, opened fire at a protester on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, while the latter was demonstrating against the violence in Manipur. The protester, Gurpreet Singh, was rushed to a hospital in a critical condition. The incident took place in the Sadar Bazaar area of Moga. Singh was part of a group of protesters who were marching against the killing of five civilians by security forces in Manipur's Churachandpur district on July 29.

As the protesters were marching, the shopkeeper, Surjit Singh, came out of his shop and opened fire at them. Singh was hit in the chest and fell to the ground. The shopkeeper then fled the scene. The police have registered a case against the shopkeeper and are on the lookout for him. Gurpreet Singh is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Moga. He is in critical condition.

The incident has sparked outrage in Punjab. The opposition parties have condemned the attack and demanded the arrest of the shopkeeper. The Punjab government has also condemned the attack and ordered a probe into the matter.

The violence in Manipur has also triggered protests in other parts of the country. On Tuesday, August 8, 2023, a group of protesters in Ludhiana, Punjab, blocked the railway tracks and demanded the withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from Manipur. The AFSPA is a controversial law that gives sweeping powers to the security forces in areas declared as "disturbed". The law has been accused of being used to commit human rights abuses in Manipur and other northeastern states.

The violence in Manipur has also raised questions about the role of the security forces. The Manipur government has appointed a commission to investigate the incident. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has also taken suo motu cognizance of the incident and has sought a report from the Manipur government.

The violence in Manipur shows us of the ongoing conflict in the northeastern states of India. The conflict has its roots in the history of the region and the demands of the various ethnic groups for self-determination. The conflict has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions of people. The violence in Manipur is a serious concern for the Indian government. The government needs to find a way to resolve the conflict and bring peace to the region.
