Russia launched a major overnight missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, killing at least 13 people and injuring dozens more. The assault continued for hours into Thursday, with loud explosions shaking several parts of the city.
According to Ukrainian authorities, residential buildings and civilian infrastructure were damaged in multiple districts. Fires broke out, some structures partially collapsed, and rescue teams searched damaged buildings for trapped residents. Nearly 500 emergency workers and around 100 rescue units were deployed.
Ukraine said Russia used a large mix of missiles and drones in the attack. The Financial Times reported that Russia fired 74 missiles and launched 496 attack drones, while Ukrainian air defences intercepted most of them.
Ukrainian officials condemned the attack and again appealed to Western allies for stronger air defence systems, including Patriot batteries. Russia claimed it had targeted military and energy facilities, but Ukrainian officials said civilian areas were hit.
The latest attack comes amid intensified strikes from both sides, with Ukraine also targeting Russian oil and military infrastructure in recent days. The Kyiv assault has once again highlighted the heavy civilian cost of the continuing Russia-Ukraine war.
