Washington: US President Donald Trump has accused Iran of carrying out attacks on vessels carrying Indian seafarers near the Strait of Hormuz, calling the alleged incident “totally unacceptable”. The remarks have intensified tensions between Washington and Tehran amid a growing dispute over maritime security in the Gulf region.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump claimed that Iran was responsible for a drone attack targeting Indian-linked ships leaving the Strait of Hormuz. He also criticised Tehran over its statements regarding a possible peace agreement, accusing Iranian officials of not acting in good faith.
The US President’s comments came after reports that three vessels with Indian crew members came under attack off the Oman coast. One of the incidents involving the tanker MT Settebello resulted in the deaths of three Indian seafarers, leading to strong concerns from India over the safety of its citizens working in international waters.
India has raised serious objections over the attacks on commercial shipping and described the situation as deeply worrying. New Delhi has also taken up the matter diplomatically, expressing concern over the use of force against civilian vessels.
The accusations have added another layer to the ongoing US-Iran conflict, with both sides presenting different versions of events. While Trump blamed Tehran for the alleged drone attack, Iran has rejected such claims and described them as baseless.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime routes, through which a significant portion of global energy shipments pass. Any escalation in the region could have wider consequences for international trade, fuel supplies and the safety of thousands of seafarers.
Indian sailors form a major part of the global maritime workforce, and the recent incidents have increased concerns about their safety in conflict zones. Authorities continue to monitor developments as diplomatic efforts continue to prevent further escalation.
