Trump Says Kim Jong Responded to Outreach

Washington: US President Donald Trump has said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has responded to his recent outreach, describing the exchange as “very positive” and raising the possibility of renewed dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang. Trump made the remarks at the Oval Office on Monday, August 17, but did not reveal the nature of Kim’s response or whether the two leaders had spoken directly.

Asked by reporters why Kim had not responded to his request for a conversation, Trump pushed back, saying there was no basis for assuming that Kim had ignored the outreach. He then confirmed that the North Korean leader had responded and characterised the communication positively.

The development comes shortly after Trump ordered the Pentagon to substantially reduce US-South Korean military exercises, including the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield drills. Trump has argued that scaling back the exercises could make the Korean Peninsula safer and has repeatedly highlighted his personal relationship with Kim.

Trump has maintained that he has a strong rapport with the North Korean leader, saying Kim has always treated him with respect. The two leaders held three high-profile meetings during Trump's first presidency, including summits in Singapore and Hanoi and a meeting at the Korean Demilitarized Zone in 2019. However, negotiations over North Korea's nuclear programme ultimately stalled.

There has been no immediate public confirmation from Pyongyang about the latest exchange. North Korea has also continued to strengthen its military and strategic ties with Russia and China in recent years, making any potential return to US-North Korea negotiations more complicated.

South Korea has nevertheless welcomed the possibility of renewed engagement. Seoul's government has indicated that improved communication between Washington and Pyongyang could contribute to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

Analysts caution that Trump's statement does not necessarily mean a summit or formal negotiations are imminent. Experts say significant differences remain between Washington and Pyongyang, particularly over North Korea's nuclear weapons programme and security demands.

Still, Kim's reported response marks a potentially important development in US efforts to reopen communication with North Korea. Trump appears keen to revive the personal diplomacy that characterised his first term, while the reduction of military exercises with South Korea signals a willingness to adjust US policy in an effort to create conditions for renewed dialogue.
