US President Donald Trump has revealed that the United States was “an hour away” from launching a fresh military strike on Iran before he decided to pause the operation to allow space for diplomacy.
Speaking at the White House, Trump said American warships and military assets were fully prepared for action, but the attack was temporarily halted after renewed diplomatic efforts and requests from Gulf nations to avoid further escalation in the region.
Trump warned, however, that the US could still carry out “another big hit” if ongoing negotiations with Tehran fail to produce a deal. He said Iran has been given only a “limited period of time” to reach an agreement over its nuclear programme and regional security concerns.
According to reports, leaders from Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates urged Washington to hold back military action while indirect talks continued between US and Iranian representatives. The diplomatic push reportedly played a major role in Trump’s decision to delay the strikes.
The US President also confirmed that he had instructed the military to remain ready for a “full-scale assault” at short notice if negotiations collapse. Senior American officials later met to review military options and assess the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East.
Iran responded sharply to Trump’s remarks. Iranian military officials warned that Tehran would open “new fronts” against the US and Israel if any fresh attacks are launched. Iran also claimed it continues to maintain control over the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments.
The tensions come amid fears of a wider regional conflict involving Iran, Israel and US forces. Global oil markets and shipping routes in the Gulf have already seen volatility due to concerns over possible military escalation.
