The United States and Iran are preparing to sign a landmark peace agreement on June 19 in Switzerland, marking a major breakthrough after months of military confrontation, diplomatic negotiations and regional instability. The deal is expected to formally end a conflict that has disrupted global energy markets and raised fears of a wider war across the Middle East.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran have a long history, particularly over Iran’s nuclear program. In recent years, negotiations repeatedly stalled over issues including uranium enrichment, sanctions and regional security. Fresh talks resumed in 2025 and continued into 2026, with both sides seeking a framework that could prevent further escalation.

A major turning point came on February 28, 2026, when the United States and Israel launched large-scale strikes against Iranian targets, triggering a broader conflict. Iran responded with attacks on regional targets and actions affecting shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil transit routes.

In March and April, international mediators worked to prevent a prolonged war. Pakistan played a central role in facilitating negotiations, leading to temporary ceasefires and back-channel discussions. The talks focused on restoring maritime security, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, addressing Iran’s nuclear activities and creating conditions for long-term peace.

Over the past several weeks, negotiations intensified. Reports indicated that both sides were moving closer to a memorandum of understanding covering ceasefire arrangements, economic measures and future nuclear discussions. On June 15, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the peace deal was effectively complete, while Iranian authorities confirmed that the text of the agreement had been finalized. The formal signing is scheduled for June 19 in Switzerland.

According to details released so far, the agreement includes an immediate and permanent halt to hostilities, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a 60-day period of negotiations aimed at resolving outstanding nuclear issues. Discussions during that period are expected to focus on uranium enrichment, sanctions relief and the future management of Iran’s nuclear program.

The announcement has already had a significant impact on global markets. Oil prices fell sharply as traders reacted to the prospect of restored stability in the Gulf region and the reopening of critical shipping routes. International leaders, including senior United Nations officials, have welcomed the agreement while urging all sides to implement it in good faith.

While challenges remain, the June 19 signing could become one of the most significant diplomatic developments in U.S.-Iran relations in decades, offering hope for greater regional stability and renewed dialogue after months of conflict.
