India has called on the government of Dhaka to extend full cooperation in the process of repatriating illegal Bangladeshi immigrants residing in India, reinforcing its long-standing position on coordinated border management and migration control.

According to officials from the Indian side, the issue of undocumented migration remains a key point of discussion between New Delhi and Dhaka, with India stressing the need for a structured and verifiable mechanism to identify and return individuals who are found to be staying in the country without valid documentation.

The appeal comes amid ongoing efforts by India to strengthen border security and improve the management of cross-border movement along the India–Bangladesh frontier. Authorities have reiterated that repatriation processes must be carried out in accordance with established bilateral procedures, including verification of nationality by the concerned authorities in Bangladesh.

Indian officials have stated that cooperation from Dhaka is essential to ensure that the process is smooth, humane, and legally compliant. They also emphasized that effective coordination between the two countries has previously helped resolve similar issues and that continued engagement is necessary to address current challenges.

The matter of illegal immigration has been a recurring topic in bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh, particularly concerning states that share porous borders. India has consistently maintained that undocumented migration places administrative and security pressure on border states, while also complicating demographic and resource management.

At the same time, India has underlined that it values its broader relationship with Bangladesh and remains committed to maintaining constructive ties based on mutual respect and cooperation. Officials noted that migration-related issues should be addressed through dialogue rather than confrontation, with both sides working together to identify practical solutions.

The request for cooperation also aligns with India’s broader internal policy measures aimed at documenting residents and streamlining citizenship verification processes. Authorities have said that identification of illegal immigrants is carried out through due legal procedures and subject to verification by the respective national governments.

While no formal response has yet been issued by Dhaka regarding the latest statement, diplomatic channels between the two countries remain active. Officials expect the issue to be taken up through existing bilateral mechanisms dealing with border management and consular coordination.

As discussions continue, both sides are likely to focus on ensuring that migration-related challenges are addressed in a balanced manner, without affecting the overall stability of India–Bangladesh relations, which remain strategically important for regional cooperation in South Asia.
