All Wine Shops Will Close in Kashmir Soon: Ex-Srinagar Mayor

In a strong declaration ahead of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, former Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu pledged that every wine shop in Kashmir would eventually close down. Speaking at a campaign rally in the Zadibal segment of Srinagar on Saturday, Mattu, who is contesting as an Independent candidate, expressed his firm stance against the sale of alcohol in the region.

Mattu emphasized that the closure of wine shops is essential to uphold the cultural and moral values of Kashmir. He said that if he is elected, he will ensure steps are taken to shut down these shops, which he believes are contributing to social decay.

"The day will come when not a single wine shop will remain open in Kashmir," Mattu promised, adding that the youth and families of the Valley need to be protected from the harmful effects of alcohol. He also criticized the government for allowing the sale of liquor, saying it goes against the traditional ethos of the region.

Mattu’s announcement has sparked discussions across political circles and among residents. While some have hailed his stance, others believe that the move may face challenges due to the existing revenue system dependent on alcohol sales. Nonetheless, Mattu remained adamant, saying that preserving Kashmir’s culture is more important than any financial gains.

As the elections approach, this promise could become a key issue for voters in the Zadibal constituency, where Mattu aims to secure a victory.
