Green Boost for J&K: Govt Allocates ₹15 Cr

In a significant move to strengthen Jammu and Kashmir’s green footprint, the Government of India has allocated ₹15 crore for expanding forest and tree cover in the union territory. The decision comes amid growing concerns about environmental degradation and the need for sustainable development in the ecologically sensitive region.

The allocated funds will reportedly focus on reforestation, afforestation, and maintaining existing forest areas, a vital step to combat climate change impacts in the region. Authorities have emphasized that the project will also contribute to the livelihood of local communities by creating green jobs and promoting eco-tourism.

Experts see this initiative as a double-edged sword. While the allocation is being hailed as a positive move for preserving J&K's biodiversity, questions loom over whether the government has a clear roadmap to ensure effective implementation. Past efforts at similar conservation projects in the region have often fallen short due to administrative delays and lack of local engagement.

Moreover, critics argue that ₹15 crore is a modest figure considering the scale of work required to rejuvenate the region’s natural resources. Some environmentalists are urging the government to prioritize stricter policies against illegal deforestation and unsustainable urbanization alongside such allocations.

As the people of Jammu and Kashmir await tangible results from this initiative, one thing is clear: balancing ecological preservation with socio-economic growth remains an uphill challenge for policymakers.
