Himachal Ends Power Subsidy for Large Industries

Himachal Pradesh, struggling with financial setbacks, has made a bold move to cut power subsidies for large industries, aiming to save an estimated Rs 700 crore annually. The state government, facing severe funding constraints after recent natural disasters and economic downturns, is shifting its focus towards channeling resources into more critical areas. This decision is expected to impact major industries that had long benefited from the lower electricity tariffs, potentially increasing their operational costs significantly.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu confirmed the decision, stating that the funds saved through this subsidy cut would be reallocated towards vital infrastructure and recovery efforts, particularly in sectors like healthcare, education, and disaster management. He also emphasized that the move is temporary, suggesting the possibility of reviewing the policy once the state's finances stabilize.

While large industries may face challenges, the government reassured small and medium enterprises that their subsidies would remain intact, recognizing their essential role in driving the state's economy and creating jobs. Industrial leaders, however, expressed concern, with many calling for a phased approach to avoid sudden disruptions in their operations.

The state’s decision marks a crucial turning point, reflecting its need to balance industrial support with fiscal prudence as it works towards economic recovery.
