Lifeline for Telangana Farmers

Farmers are getting, on an average, ₹12,000 per acre on an ongoing basis, with this plan focusing on reducing the distress in agriculture and at the same time improving the rural economy of Telangana.

The Telangana government's announcement that every farmer in the state would receive ₹12,000 annually per acre has brought much discussion across the state. Many see it as a very essential lifeline for struggling farmers. Some critics say it does notice the very base of the problem in the agrarian crisis.

Under this scheme, an appointment with a given approval authority shall be given to all qualifying farmers in three equal payments so as to facilitate timely assistance for crop production and other related expenditures. Preventively, such an approach would stabilize the economy of the countryside right now, considering that farmers are still experiencing high input costs but grappling with variables in market prices.

Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao has promoted the scheme as a proof of his government’s interest in farmers’ welfare. Many opposition leaders and some agricultural experts, however, are skeptical about the sustainability of the programme. They argue that while such cash transfers provide immediate relief, they do not get to the core of most systemic issues, such as poor irrigation access, lack of market linkages, and the specter of climate change.

It will include all tenant farmers, who are usually left out of the welfare schemes. However, there is again a question as to how well it will be implemented, especially in identifying and reaching out to all eligible beneficiaries.
