Shah Stands Firm: Democracy Runs Deep in India

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, addressing the Rajya Sabha, strongly emphasized the resilience and depth of India’s democratic system. Responding to allegations from the Congress concerning the credibility of electronic voting machines (EVMs), Shah stated that such claims undermine the faith of the Indian people in their democratic institutions.

Shah asserted that India's democracy is not only vibrant but deeply rooted in its traditions, upheld by the will of the people. "Casting doubt on EVMs is casting doubt on the people of India," he remarked, calling the Congress’s stance an attempt to divert attention from its electoral failures.

The controversy arose during a heated debate in the House, where opposition leaders alleged tampering of EVMs in recent elections. Shah dismissed these claims as baseless and reiterated the Election Commission's commitment to conducting free and fair elections. He pointed to multiple instances where opposition parties themselves had won elections conducted via EVMs, showcasing their reliability.

Critics, however, argue that the government needs to do more to address the concerns raised by various parties. Transparency and public trust in electoral processes are paramount, they say. Shah countered these claims, stating that consistent questioning of EVMs serves to discredit the democratic mandate of the people.

The debate reflects a larger political tussle, with the Congress accusing the BJP of consolidating power through questionable means, while the BJP views such accusations as an act of desperation. The discourse on EVMs is likely to persist as India heads toward crucial state and general elections.
