Sonam Wangchuk Released After 44-Hour Detention

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, along with 150 volunteers, was detained for 44 hours by Delhi police. The group was initially stopped while attempting to pay tribute at the Gandhi Samadhi at Raj Ghat. The incident, which drew significant attention, occurred amidst heavy police deployment in the area.

Wangchuk, who is known for his environmental activism and efforts to combat climate change in the Himalayas, had planned a peaceful homage to Mahatma Gandhi. However, the Delhi police detained him and his group, citing concerns over crowd control and potential disruptions in the area.

The group, which included volunteers from various parts of the country, remained in police custody for nearly two days. During this time, they were held at a police station under strict supervision.

In the evening of the second day, the police released Wangchuk and his volunteers, escorting them from the site under heavy security. Following his release, Wangchuk addressed the media, expressing disappointment over the incident. He reiterated the importance of peaceful protests and urged the government to pay more attention to the climate crisis.

The 44-hour detention has raised concerns among environmentalists and activists about the increasing crackdown on peaceful protests. Wangchuk's release marks the end of a tense standoff, but questions remain about the treatment of climate activists in the country.
