Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday addressed the nation from the Red Fort on India’s 80th Independence Day, placing resilience, self-reliance and the aspirations of young Indians at the centre of his vision for the country’s future.

In his 13th consecutive Independence Day address from the Red Fort, Modi reaffirmed the goal of building a developed India by 2047, when the country will mark 100 years of independence. He urged citizens to think bigger and work with determination to fulfil the dreams of the freedom fighters.

A major theme of the speech was India’s ability to withstand global crises. Referring to challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical conflicts, the Prime Minister said preparations made over the past decade helped the country maintain supplies of essential commodities, including fuel and fertilisers. He presented this preparedness as an important part of India’s growing self-reliance.

Modi also outlined what he described as the country’s “Sapta Dhara” or seven streams of strength. The approach places emphasis on areas including critical minerals, energy security, technology, manufacturing and other strategic sectors. Semiconductor production was given particular importance, with the government looking to expand domestic capacity in the coming years.

Energy security emerged as another key priority. Modi spoke about expanding nuclear power capacity, with an ambitious target of 100 GW by 2047, alongside efforts to strengthen domestic energy capabilities.

The Prime Minister placed young people at the heart of the development agenda. He announced plans to provide AI training to one crore young Indians over the next year and highlighted initiatives aimed at improving access to competitive-exam preparation. His message was that India’s demographic strength must translate into skills, innovation and employment opportunities.

National security and social unity also featured prominently. Modi paid tribute to security personnel who lost their lives fighting Naxal violence and stressed the need for continued vigilance against threats to national integrity. He also called for unity and confidence while invoking the patriotic spirit associated with “Vande Mataram.”

The address combined a reflection on India’s ability to face uncertainty with a forward-looking development agenda. Modi’s central message was clear: a stronger, more self-reliant India must be built through preparedness, technology, youth power and collective determination, with 2047 serving as the long-term national milestone.
