Swift Action Prevents Reasi Tragedy
In a critically important step, security forces of Jammu and Kashmir were successful in defusing an improvised explosive device (IED) in the Reasi district Tuesday that had a great potential to cause disaster. The explosive had been located near a busy route and was aimed at targeting civilians and security personnel.
The swift act has again put the highlands threat of militants up in the region. Just after the incident, General Officer Commanding (GOC) Maj. Gen. Rajiv Kumar held a top-level security review in Poonch to assess regional preparedness. There was a heavy emphasis on further strengthening surveillance and coordination among agencies.
Sources reveal, the IED was very sophisticated signifying that the insurgents have indeed gone a notch higher in their tactics. The people felt relieved that the immediate response was fast, but they argue about the recurrences in threats. A local shopkeeper said, "It's like living on borrowed time. What we want is real peace, not just temporary arrangements."
The proactive measures of the army including increased patrolling and sharing of intelligence have been appreciated. However, experts opine that counter insurgency requires a deeper strategy. Poonch being a sensitive border area has to observe very strict vigilance in preventing future attempts.
Of course, this would always serve as a very sobering reminder of the persistent and deep rooted problems in the valley. Timely moves saved lives this time, but the bigger question is: What is the level of our preparedness for what will come next?
