Tension Flares in Shimla as Mosque Dispute Sparks Clashes

Shimla witnessed unrest on Wednesday after a dispute over a local mosque escalated into violent clashes between two groups. The incident occurred in the city's bustling Lower Bazaar area, where tensions had been simmering for days over the mosque’s ownership and land rights.

According to eyewitnesses, a heated argument broke out in the afternoon, quickly spiraling into physical confrontations. Angry mobs hurled stones at each other, causing panic among residents and shopkeepers in the vicinity. Shops were forced to close as the conflict intensified.

In response to the escalating violence, local police arrived at the scene, attempting to disperse the crowds. However, their initial efforts failed as both sides continued to clash. To bring the situation under control, law enforcement resorted to using force, including tear gas and baton charges. Several people sustained injuries during the confrontation, though none were reported to be life-threatening.

"The situation is now under control," said a senior police officer on the scene. "We are investigating the matter and will ensure that the culprits responsible for instigating the violence are brought to justice."

The mosque dispute has been a sensitive issue in the community for some time, with both sides claiming ownership of the land. The local administration is now urging both parties to settle the matter through peaceful dialogue and avoid further violence.

A heavy police presence remains in the area to prevent any additional flare-ups. The authorities have also imposed Section 144, prohibiting large gatherings to ensure peace is maintained in the coming days.
