The Hidden Beneficiary: Farooq Abdullah’s Daughter Gains from Article 370’s Abrogation

Union Minister Jitendra Singh’s recent disclosure that Farooq Abdullah’s daughter regained assets post the abrogation of Article 370 has added a surprising twist to the already heated political discourse surrounding Jammu and Kashmir. The revelation has not only triggered shockwaves across political circles but has also reignited debates about the true beneficiaries of the constitutional move that stripped the region of its special status.

Singh’s statement suggests that the Article 370 revocation, touted as a nationalist victory by the ruling BJP, might have had some unintended winners. Farooq Abdullah’s daughter, who had previously lost her assets due to her marriage to Congress leader Sachin Pilot, has allegedly reclaimed those very properties in the aftermath of the abrogation.

This unexpected development begs the question: was Article 370’s abrogation solely for the purpose of integrating Kashmir with India, or did it also serve to restore privileges to a select few? While the BJP continues to defend its decision as a monumental step towards national integration and development for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, Singh’s revelation has cast a shadow on the integrity of that narrative.

The fact that the daughter of a prominent political leader from a family that historically opposed the abrogation has now benefitted from it is indeed ironic. The Abdullah family has been at the forefront of opposing the move since day one, arguing it would disenfranchise and harm the people of Kashmir. Yet, with this new information, it appears that the family’s fortunes have, at least in part, been favorably altered by the very decision they fought against.

This scenario, where political leaders’ families seem to emerge unscathed or even enriched, while the common Kashmiri still grapples with economic challenges and restricted freedoms, paints a grim picture. It highlights the disparities that exist between the political elite and the ordinary citizens they claim to represent.

The controversy surrounding Singh’s remarks will likely fuel further criticism of the BJP’s handling of the Article 370 abrogation. As more details emerge, the public will be left questioning: who truly benefits from such grand political decisions?
