Tragedy Hits Soldiers in J&K
Two soldiers died, while three others suffered severe injuries after an Army truck plunged into a gorge of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday. The accident happened more close to the border of Rajouri-Poonch and was said to have the most dangerous roads in the region.
Initial reports suggest that the truck was part of a convoy traveling to a forward post, when the driver lost control on the sharp turn, and the truck plummeted several feet down into the gorge, complicating the rescue operations.
The injured soldiers were immediately airlifted to a nearby Army hospital, where they continue to be treated in critical condition. Authorities have launched an investigation into whether mechanical failure or human fault led to the tragedy.
It gives an indication as to what hell constant dangers that soldiers face, who serve in high-altitude areas. Experts claim that poor road infrastructure combined with erratic weather increases risks to troops in those areas. While the Army has given a patrolling regimen to these difficult terrain routes, safety of vehicle protocol and maintenance raises eye-brows post-accident.
These losses are particularly stark reminders of sacrifices made by soldiers silently outside the battlefront. As the Army mourns fallen comrades, it is time the policy-makers address the continued assault on safety on the roads, such as in these high-risk areas.
