UP Police Draws Flak for Blocking Gandhi Siblings’ Sambhal Visit
In a dramatic turn of events, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra publicly condemned the Uttar Pradesh police for denying them access to Sambhal on Thursday. The siblings had planned to meet victims of a recent clash in the region but were reportedly stopped en route, sparking allegations of political suppression against the BJP-led state government.
The Gandhis termed the police action "undemocratic" and "against the fundamental rights of the Leader of Opposition." Rahul Gandhi stated, “This is yet another example of how the BJP government fears accountability. They are trying to gag voices that speak for the people.” Priyanka Gandhi echoed his sentiment, labeling the incident a blatant misuse of administrative power to silence dissent.
Local authorities, however, justified the move, citing “law and order concerns” as the primary reason for barring the Congress leaders’ visit. The Sambhal administration maintained that the situation on the ground was “tense” and that prohibiting high-profile visits was essential to avoid further escalation.
The Congress party, in response, has called the justification flimsy and demanded an explanation from the Uttar Pradesh government. “This is not about law and order. It’s about suppressing democracy and the opposition’s voice,” said a senior Congress spokesperson.
The incident has ignited a fresh political debate, with critics accusing the BJP of using state machinery to stifle opposition movements. As the controversy unfolds, it remains to be seen whether such tactics will help or hurt the ruling party's credibility in the long run.
