A violent clash broke out on Saturday afternoon outside the Congress office in Indore between activists of the Indian National Congress and workers from the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), leaving around 10 people injured, including a police officer and two journalists, officials said.
The confrontation occurred near Gandhi Bhavan, the city congress headquarters, after BJYM members reached the site to protest against a demonstration by the Indian Youth Congress at the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi the previous day. According to police, tensions quickly escalated into stone‑pelting from both sides.
Eyewitnesses reported that once the BJYM group arrived, Congress workers also gathered near Gandhi Bhavan, and soon both sides began hurling stones, water bottles, oranges and even tomatoes at each other. Barricades were put up by the police to try to contain the situation, but the clash intensified despite the security measures.
Police had to bring water cannons into use to disperse the crowd and restore order, a senior officer said. Around 10 people sustained injuries, among them a police sub‑inspector and two journalists covering the incident, who were rushed for medical treatment.
Both political sides accused each other of initiating the violence, with leaders demanding strict action against those responsible. The Additional Police Commissioner said that investigations were underway and that action would be taken against identified miscreants, while the situation in the area was described as now under control.
The unrest reflects escalating political tensions linked to nationwide protests and counter‑protests following the recent Youth Congress demonstration at the AI summit, which has triggered reactions from various party units across the region.
