Guwahati: Assam's largest city, Guwahati, is set to become the first city in the northeast to stage a Test cricket match when India play South Africa in November, said BCCI general secretary Devajit Saikia on Sunday.
The city will also host its first-ever World Cup match later this year during the ICC Women's ODI World Cup, he added.
"Up to now, Guwahati has not seen any Test or World Cup games. But after a decision taken during the BCCI top brass meeting on Saturday, Guwahati will host both the events this year," Saikia said.
He further stated that the second of the two-Test series match between South Africa and India will be hosted at the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) Stadium from November 22.
This will officially put Guwahati on the Test cricket map, he observed. The ACA Stadium will also be hosting five or six games of the ICC Women's ODI World Cup, which will be the first World Cup cricket matches in the northeast, Saikia added.
"The women's World Cup is to be held from Sep 24 to Nov 2, and the final schedule is being finalized. Guwahati has been selected as one of the venues," Saikia said.
Saikia, who was a former general secretary of the ACA, thanked ICC Chairman Jay Shah and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for supporting the city in becoming a popular cricket destination.
