NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday dismissed the Congress’ accusation of “vendetta politics” in relation to the National Herald case, calling the allegation “baseless” and asserting that the party’s leaders must account for the financial irregularities they are accused of committing.
The remarks came after the Congress criticised the filing of an FIR by Delhi Police against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. The opposition party alleged that the action reflected the “mischievous politics of harassment, intimidation, and vendetta” by what it described as the “Modi–Shah duo”. Congress leaders claimed the case was politically motivated and stated that the National Herald matter was a “completely bogus case”. They maintained that they were confident “justice will ultimately triumph”.
Responding sharply, BJP spokespersons said the Congress should explain the alleged “loot” linked to the case instead of issuing political statements. They argued that legal agencies were acting independently and that political pressure could not be attributed to routine investigative processes. The BJP maintained that the allegations levelled by Congress were an attempt to divert attention from financial questions that required clear responses from the party’s leadership. The National Herald case centres on financial transactions and alleged misuse of funds associated with the newspaper’s parent body. Investigations have been under way for several years, with both parties regularly trading accusations over the legal and political dimensions of the issue.
The FIR has renewed tensions between the two national parties ahead of the Winter Session of Parliament, where the matter is expected to trigger further exchanges across the political aisle.
