Congress Files Privilege Notice Against Amit Shah

Congress Member of Parliament Jairam Ramesh has issued privilege notice to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Sonia Gandhi, former Congress president, during the discussion of the Disaster Management Bill. The notice was issued in the Rajya Sabha on March 26, 2025, and claims that Shah's remarks were made with a view to giving a bad name to Gandhi and were against parliamentary privilege.

The bench erupted when Shah alleged Congress misuse of National Prime Minister's Relief Fund during governance, an allegation Ramesh terms as unsubstantiated.

This is following initial condemnation by Sonia Gandhi of the government for inadequate financing of maternity benefits under PMMVY scheme.

Ramesh's action brings to the fore heightened Indian parliamentary political tensions, particularly when Congress seeks to defend its leadership against what it feels is under attack. The act is an indicator of existing political competition and contentious climate in which legislative debate takes place in India.

As the situation develops, implications of such a privilege notice may extend to broader political discourse.
