Congress Slams Dhankhar’s 100-Day Silence

New Delhi: The Jagdeep Dhankhar saga has taken a fresh turn, with the Indian National Congress accusing the former Vice-President of remaining completely “silent - unseen and unheard” for 100 days since he resigned on July 21.

Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said the abrupt and late-night resignation of Dhankhar, who had assumed office in August 2022, marked “an unprecedented event in Indian political history”.   He alleged that the resignation was forced despite Dhankhar’s public support for the Prime Minister and the government. “That he was forced to do so even though he sang the praises of the PM day in and day out – was obvious,” Ramesh said.

While Dhankhar served as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha from 2022 until July 2025, his resignation was accompanied by little public statement or farewell ceremony. Congress demands at least a “dignified farewell function” in keeping with democratic tradition.

Ramesh pointed out that despite his visible presence in national headlines during his tenure, Dhankhar has now effectively disappeared from the public sphere. “For 100 days, the former Vice-President who used to be in headlines daily has been totally silent - unseen and unheard,” he stated.

The Congress also called on the government to clarify the circumstances surrounding his resignation, which cited medical reasons. They argue that the lack of farewell programme raises questions about respect for constitutional office and tradition.

As the opposition presses its demand, the government has so far offered no official statement on the matter or any announcement of a formal send-off. Observers say the row adds to the broader sense of political unease over Dhankhar’s departure and the future of the vice-presidency.
