The Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) has alleged that it was denied permission to hold a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, aimed at demanding the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and protection of constitutional rights.
In a statement, AIP Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi said the party had formally applied for permission to organise a democratic sit-in protest on February 16 between 11 am and 1 pm. The protest was intended to highlight what the party described as long-pending political and constitutional demands of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
However, the Delhi Police rejected the request through an official communication. According to Inam Un Nabi, the rejection was based on several administrative and security concerns. These included preparations for the upcoming AI Impact Summit–2026, enhanced security arrangements in the national capital, traffic management requirements, and compliance with guidelines issued under SO No. L&O/48/2022 in accordance with Supreme Court directions.
The AIP expressed disappointment over the decision, stating that the party had planned a peaceful and lawful protest within the democratic framework. The spokesperson emphasized that the party respects the law but believes that peaceful protest is a fundamental democratic right.
He further said the protest was intended to draw national attention to the demand for restoration of statehood and other political rights in Jammu and Kashmir. The party also urged authorities to ensure that democratic voices are heard and respected.
The denial of permission comes amid heightened security and administrative measures in Delhi due to major upcoming events. Despite the setback, AIP leaders indicated that they remain committed to pursuing their demands through democratic and constitutional means.
The development highlights ongoing political tensions and continuing demands related to Jammu and Kashmir’s constitutional and administrative status.
