Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on Mamata Banerjee, alleging that the people of West Bengal have been living under fear and oppression during her tenure as Chief Minister.
Speaking at a public event, Dhami criticised the governance of the All India Trinamool Congress government and claimed that democracy and law and order have weakened in the state. According to him, incidents of political violence and intimidation have created an atmosphere of fear among ordinary citizens.
“The people of Bengal have faced oppression and fear under Mamata Banerjee’s rule,” Dhami said, adding that the situation has raised serious concerns about democratic functioning in the state.
The Uttarakhand Chief Minister further alleged that political opponents and common people often struggle to express their views freely. He claimed that several reports of political clashes and attacks on opposition workers have surfaced over the years, reflecting what he described as a “deteriorating political climate” in West Bengal.
Dhami also urged voters in the state to carefully evaluate the current political environment and choose leadership that ensures peace, development, and democratic rights. His remarks come at a time when political tensions between the ruling party and opposition groups continue to remain high in West Bengal.
Leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party have frequently accused the Trinamool Congress government of failing to control violence and maintain law and order. They claim that opposition supporters often face intimidation, especially during election periods.
However, leaders of the Trinamool Congress have strongly rejected such allegations in the past, stating that these accusations are politically motivated and aimed at damaging the image of the state government. They argue that West Bengal continues to progress in several sectors, including infrastructure, social welfare, and public services.
Political observers note that statements like Dhami’s often emerge during periods of heightened political activity, particularly when national parties attempt to expand their influence in states governed by rival parties.
As the political discourse intensifies, the debate over governance and law and order in West Bengal is likely to remain a major issue in the country’s political landscape.
