CHENNAI, 3 April,2025

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK chief M K Stalin squarely opposed the Waqf Bill that was voted in the Lok Sabha. He announced on Thursday that his party would approach the Supreme Court in legal challenge against the Bill.

Stalin came to the Assembly donning a black badge in protest of the passing of the Bill. He told that the amendment was passed at 2 am "at the behest of a few friends," even though most parties in India were opposed to it and termed it "an attack on the framework of the Constitution."

"This step is breaking religious harmony. We are wearing black badges today as a symbol of our disapproval," the chief minister told the members.

The DMK thinks the Waqf Bill violates the secularism of the nation.

"I wish to inform you that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) will move a case in the Supreme Court against this contentious amendment. Tamil Nadu will resist the Union government's legislation that encroaches upon the autonomy of the Waqf Board and threatens the minority Muslim community," Stalin announced, as Treasury members applauded.

He recalled that the state Assembly had earlier on March 27 adopted a resolution against the proposed amendment since it would do great damage to India's religious harmony and minority Muslim community.

Stalin faulted the Lok Sabha's passage of the Waqf Act amendment, recalling that 232 MPs voted against it, a big number which would increase. He said only 288 members voted for the amendment.

There has been fierce debate over the Waqf Bill.
