Parts of Rajasthan are already experiencing summer-like conditions, with rising temperatures prompting weather authorities to issue a yellow alert in Jaisalmer. The alert comes as the desert district records unusually high temperatures for this time of year, signalling an early onset of heat across western parts of the state.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), temperatures in several districts of Rajasthan have climbed above normal levels, with daytime highs nearing 35–37°C in some areas. Jaisalmer, located in the Thar desert region, has been among the hottest locations in the state over the past few days.
Meteorologists say dry desert winds and clear skies have contributed to the rapid rise in temperature. The IMD issued a yellow alert as a precautionary measure, warning residents of heat-related discomfort, especially during peak afternoon hours. A yellow alert generally indicates that people should remain cautious and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
Weather officials also noted that western and north-western districts of Rajasthan are particularly vulnerable to early heat spells because of their desert terrain. Cities such as Bikaner, Barmer and Jodhpur have also reported steadily increasing temperatures, though conditions in Jaisalmer remain the most intense at the moment.
Health experts have advised residents to take basic precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during the afternoon, and wearing light cotton clothing. Authorities have also urged elderly people and children to be particularly careful as temperatures continue to climb.
The IMD expects the heat trend to persist over the coming days, with temperatures likely to remain above seasonal averages in several parts of the state. However, weather officials said no severe heatwave conditions have been officially declared yet.
Early heat spells in Rajasthan are not uncommon, but the current rise in temperature has arrived slightly earlier than usual this year. Meteorologists will continue to monitor the situation closely as the region gradually transitions into the peak summer months of April and May, when temperatures in desert districts like Jaisalmer often cross 45°C.
