A case has been registered in Thiruvananthapuram after a fabricated video of the Chief Election Commissioner linked to the upcoming local body elections in Kerala was found circulating on social media on Friday. Officials confirmed the development on Saturday, stating that the video had been detected during routine cyber patrolling.

According to officials, the Thiruvananthapuram City Cyber Police initiated legal action after identifying the manipulated video, which contained misleading claims about the local body election process. The video was reportedly spreading false information intended to influence public perception ahead of the polls. Police officials said the source of circulation was traced to the X social media platform. “The video was found during regular cyber surveillance, and an enquiry was launched immediately,” an officer said. Authorities noted that such content has the potential to create confusion among voters and undermine trust in the election system.

The Cyber Police registered the case under relevant sections dealing with the creation and distribution of deceptive digital material. Officers added that efforts are under way to identify the individuals behind the fabrication and online dissemination of the clip. “We are tracing the origin of the video and those involved in sharing it,” a police official stated. Officials emphasised that the circulation of false material concerning election authorities is a serious offence, particularly at a time when preparations for the local body elections are under way. They warned that strict action would be taken against anyone attempting to mislead the public or disrupt the integrity of the electoral process.

The Election Commission has not issued a separate statement on the incident so far, but officials highlighted that measures to curb misinformation remain a significant focus in the lead up to the elections. Authorities also urged the public to verify information before sharing it online and to rely on official channels for election related updates.
