Amritsar and Chandigarh March 5, 2025 – Thousands of farmers gathered at the Golden Gate in Amritsar and Chandigarh-Punjab border today, protesting against the Punjab government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The farmers are demanding action on issues such as crop pricing, debt relief, and promises made by the government that they say have not been fulfilled. In addition, farmers also staged a major protest at the Chandigarh border, further intensifying the unrest in the state.

Farmers’ Concerns and Demands

The farmers who gathered in Amritsar and at the Chandigarh-Punjab border are frustrated with the government’s agricultural policies. They are calling for better Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for their crops, faster debt relief, and more attention to their problems. “The government has not done enough for farmers, and we want change,” said one protestor.

Protest Causes Traffic Disruptions in Amritsar and Chandigarh

The protests caused significant traffic disruptions in both Amritsar and at the Chandigarh border. Farmers blocked key roads and highways, leading to delays for commuters and affecting daily business activities. Many farmers expressed frustration over rising farming costs and delayed payments, which they say have made their livelihoods difficult.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann Criticized

The protest reflects growing discontent with CM Bhagwant Mann’s government. Farmers claim that the promises made during the election campaign have not been kept, leading to feelings of betrayal. “The government says it is helping farmers, but we don’t see any real changes,” said a farmer leader at the Amritsar protest.

Government Calls for Dialogue

In response to the protests, the Punjab government has urged farmer unions to meet and discuss their concerns. Agriculture Minister [SHIVRAJ SINGH CHOUHAN] said, “We are committed to resolving the issues farmers are facing. We encourage them to talk with us so we can find solutions together.”

However, many farmers remain doubtful, saying that past talks have not resulted in any significant changes.

Opposition Parties Join the Protest

Opposition political parties in Punjab, including the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Congress, have expressed support for the protesting farmers. They criticized CM Bhagwant Mann’s government for not addressing the needs of the farming community. “Farmers are the backbone of Punjab, and the government has failed them,” said an opposition leader.

Ongoing Struggles

The protests in Amritsar and at the Chandigarh border are part of a larger wave of farmer unrest across Punjab. Farmers have been voicing their concerns over agricultural issues for months, with no resolution in sight. The situation continues to put pressure on CM Bhagwant Mann’s government, and it remains to be seen how the government will respond to the growing frustration of the farming community
