The airport in Maharashtra's Baramati – near which the Learjet 45 private jet carrying Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar crashed, killing all five on board – is an 'uncontrolled' airfield with flight traffic information handled by pilots from local flying schools, the government said Wednesday afternoon.
Pawar was born on 22 July 1959 in Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra. Hailing from a family with a deep political background, Ajit Pawar was the nephew of Sharad Pawar, who was the president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and a four-time former chief minister of Maharashtra.Ajit Pawar had a brother named Shriniwas and a sister named Vijaya; the latter died on 22 January 2017.
Following the footsteps of his uncle Sharad Pawar in Indian National Congress,Ajit made his first foray into politics in 1982 when he was elected to the board of a cooperative sugar factory. In 1991, he was elected as the chairman of the Pune District Central Cooperative Bank and remained in the post for the next 16 years.

President Droupadi Murmu also gave her condolences. She said, "The news of the deaths of several people, including Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister, Shri Ajit Pawar, in an aeroplane crash in Baramati, Maharashtra, is utterly heartbreaking. The untimely demise of Shri Ajit Pawar is an irreplaceable loss. He will always be remembered for his special contribution to Maharashtra's development, particularly in the cooperative sector."
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also shared her condolences saying, "I extend my condolences to the entire Pawar family and his supporters. I have spoken to Ajit Pawar's wife and Supriya ji (Supriya Sule)."
