Whenever their captain, Hardik Pandya, serves a one-match suspension as a result of being suspended for one match due to multiple offences for slow over-rates in IPL 2024.
Mumbai Indians (MI) have confirmed Suryakumar Yadav will captain their opening match of IPL 2025 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on March 23 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Pandya will be missing the first match of the season while he serves a one-match suspension imposed for his slow over-rate in IPL 2024.
Hardik’s Suspension Comes From Last Season
Hardik is suspended because the Mumbai Indians violated the slow over-rate in his last game of IPL 2024 against Lucknow Super Giants, at Wankhede Stadium.
This was MI's third offence of the season regarding slow over-rate violations, which resulted in a 30% fine deducted from Hardik's match fee from this final match of IPL 2024, and the one-match suspension.
At MI's pre-season press conference in Mumbai, Hardik endorsed Surya Yadav as the best captain, in his absence.
“Surya leads India, and whenever I am gone, is the right man for the format. With his experience, he brings the excitement,” said Hardik.
Pandya remarked that he doesn't agree with the suspension, when asked by the press about the suspension.
Hardik Pandya responded it was unlucky, but there is nothing we can do.
"It was unfortunate, we were probably late by 2-2.5 minutes into the innings of the last match," said Hardik Pandya.
