In a major breakthrough in the battle against cross-border smuggling and terror, the Amritsar Rural Police apprehended an individual by the name of Jarman Singh, who has links to the ISI. He was in possession of weapons and counterfeit money, Punjab's Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav informed on Sunday.
The police recovered a Glock 9mm pistol, a.30 caliber pistol, three magazines, and Rs 2,15,500 in fake currency.
Early inquiries revealed that the materials were dispatched by agents of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Pakistan's premier intelligence organization, to create disturbance in the region, DGP Yadav informed.
He added that a first information report (FIR) was registered at the Gharinda police station in Amritsar.
The ongoing investigations are examining both the sources and linkages pertaining to this case, he further added.
Last week, the Amritsar's Counter Intelligence (CI) unit foiled a possible terror strike by arresting an ISI agent and seizing a hand grenade from him.
The arrested suspect was Jaiveer Tyagi, aka Jawed, a resident of Baroli village in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district, but currently based in Ludhiana.
DGP Yadav said that CI teams in Amritsar were warned about Sehlam, a foreign agent working for the ISI, and his cousin Jaiveer Tyagi. They were planning attacks on government buildings in several cities to disturb the peace.
The input also brought to light that Tyagi had also brought the consignment of hand grenade from the region of Amritsar and was awaiting his other associates at Tara Wala Pul in Amritsar to indulge in a serious crime, he stated, adding, on acting fast on credible inputs, police parties of CI Amritsar conducted an intelligence led operation and nabbed accused Tyagi. One hand grenade was found in his possession. The DGP had earlier stated that the investigations in the case showed that the arrested accused, Tyagi was living in Ludhiana for the past 14-15 years and was in touch with Sehlam via encrypted messaging applications. Investigations have also shown that according to directions from Sehlam, accused Tyagi had arranged the grenade.
