The Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir has reaffirmed the government’s zero tolerance policy against illegal mining activities in the Union Territory, emphasizing strict enforcement of environmental laws and regulatory compliance.

Speaking at a press briefing, the Deputy CM stated that unauthorized mining operations pose significant risks to local ecosystems, including deforestation, soil erosion, and water contamination. Officials said the administration is committed to cracking down on all illicit extraction activities, particularly in ecologically sensitive areas such as riverbeds, forests, and hilly terrains.

Authorities have reportedly intensified monitoring and inspection efforts, deploying teams from the Jammu and Kashmir Mining Department and environmental agencies to identify and shut down illegal operations. Heavy penalties, including fines and seizure of equipment, will be imposed on violators, the Deputy CM warned.

The move comes amid growing concerns about the environmental and social impact of unauthorized quarrying and stone-crushing activities, which have disrupted local communities and threatened biodiversity. Officials highlighted that sustainable and legally regulated mining practices are essential to balance economic growth with environmental protection.

Local stakeholders and environmental activists welcomed the announcement, calling it a necessary step to preserve the region’s natural resources and ensure long-term ecological stability. The administration has also encouraged public participation in reporting illegal activities through designated helplines and online portals.

The Deputy CM emphasized that the zero-tolerance policy is part of a broader strategy to promote sustainable development, protect natural resources, and strengthen governance mechanisms in Jammu and Kashmir. Regular audits, stricter licensing procedures, and awareness campaigns are planned to ensure compliance and prevent future violations.

By enforcing strict action against illegal mining, the government aims to safeguard local livelihoods, preserve scenic landscapes, and maintain the environmental balance critical to the Union Territory’s economy and well-being.
