Kangana Ranaut has joined the controversy over comedian Kunal Kamra's recent comments against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, saying, "There could be repercussions for what you say." Talking to journalists on March 25, 2025, Ranaut went at Kamra for his skit where he employed the word "gaddar" (traitor) for Shinde, asking the social cost of those words spoken "for two minutes of fame."
Ranaut was worried about where society is going when people employ insults of public persons for a momentary spotlight. She highlighted respect and dignity, especially towards authorities, and wondered where the credentials of people who engage in such insulting humor are.
She also compared Kamra's case to her own case of the demolishment of her bungalow by the municipal authorities in her speech, suggesting a seeming disparity in the enforcement of legal action. Ranaut explained that Kamra's actions were lawful but her case was treated unreasonably.
The audience erupted after Kamra's show, where he mocked a popular hit song and cracked jokes on political events in Maharashtra. This angered Shinde's supporters, and there were protests and violence against the event venue where Kamra had performed.
While controversy rages on the edges of comedy and political satire in India, Ranaut's remarks bring to the forefront an existing debate on freedom of expression and what comes with it.
