The Mahayuti alliance has named BJP corporator Ritu Tawde as its candidate for the post of Mumbai mayor, signalling a key political move ahead of the civic leadership transition in India’s financial capital. Alongside Tawde’s nomination, the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) has fielded Sanjay Shankar Ghadi for the post of deputy mayor. Ghadi is a corporator from Magathane, while Tawde represents Ward 132 in Ghatkopar.
The announcement reflects coordination within the Mahayuti alliance, which comprises the BJP, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and allied partners. Party leaders say the decision aims to present a united front in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), one of the country’s most influential civic bodies with control over a massive budget and key urban infrastructure projects.
Ritu Tawde is considered an organisationally strong leader within the BJP’s Mumbai unit and has worked closely on local civic issues in the eastern suburbs. Her nomination is being seen as the party’s attempt to consolidate its footprint in municipal governance, especially in a city where control of the BMC has traditionally carried significant political weight. Sanjay Shankar Ghadi, on the other hand, brings grassroots experience from the Magathane area and is viewed as a consensus choice within the Shiv Sena faction.
Political observers note that the mayoral election in Mumbai often goes beyond civic administration, acting as a barometer of shifting power equations in Maharashtra politics. With alliances recalibrated over the past few years, the Mahayuti’s choices are being read as a signal of stability within the ruling bloc at the state level.
Opposition parties are expected to scrutinise the alliance’s picks and raise questions on urban governance challenges such as infrastructure upgrades, public transport, housing, and monsoon preparedness. The formal election process is likely to take place in the coming days. More details on the voting schedule and floor strategy are awaited as parties begin last-minute outreach among corporators.
