New Zealand Sweep Series 3-0: Sears and Bracewell Crush Pakistan

The third and final ODI of the series was played at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Saturday afternoon. The match was cut short to 42 overs due to dark clouds and a soggy outfield, but drama was not in short supply. New Zealand, already 2-0 up in the series, made their own mark of authority on this encounter by defeating Pakistan by 43 runs.

When Pakistan won the toss and asked New Zealand to bat, the beginning was not so great for the Kiwis. Nick Kelly was lost for mere 3 runs and young Rhys Maru played now. The left-handed player, who made his debut in the second ODI, proved that he has come here to make a name for himself in the future. His solid 78-run partnership with Henry Nicholls slowly put pressure on Pakistan.  Mario hit a phenomenal half-century, but could not push on. Daryl Mitchell and Tim Seifert continued the momentum, but the innings that actually changed the game came from captain Michael Bracewell. He scored a tumultuous innings of 59 runs off a mere 40 deliveries and led the team to the doorstep of 264 runs.

The target was not easy, but nor was it easy for Pakistan—particularly under such conditions. The team faced a severe setback in the initial stages. Opener Imam-ul-Haq was hurt when the ball struck his helmet and had to leave the field. Captain Babar Azam walked out in his stead. The seasoned Babar Azam and Abdullah Shafiq provided some resistance at the start. There was a moment when the hue of the match could reverse with the swing of the bat of the duo.  Babar's cricket was in fabulous rhythm, his monstrous six going long on hit by Bracewell's spin was a reflection of impeccable art.

But then emerged Ben Sears. The pacer, who had obtained five wickets in the last match, once again proved that he is now the go-to face of the Kiwi pace attack. He caught Shafiq out with a short ball and removed the batter, and from there Pakistan's lineup disintegrated. Babar, Rizwan and Tahir returned to the dressing room one after the other. Though they resisted in some moments, Pakistan was not able to survive the joint onslaught of Jacob Duffy and Sears. Ultimately, their innings was terminated in 40 overs, they were dismissed for mere 221 runs.

Through this victory, New Zealand not only won the series, but also did it by whitewashing the series 3-0. They dominated in each department. The fearless performance of the young ones, the veterans' sense of responsibility, and the captain's leadership - altogether, it was a cricketing picture perfect. Pakistan, on the other hand, has a lot of questions now.  Where are the lapses, why do batting orders keep falling apart, and how to rebuild lost confidence—these are the questions that must be answered once again.

New Zealand's win is not a series victory, but a strong message for the future. They have reminded the cricketing world once again that they cannot be overlooked, they cannot be held back.
