The Indian cinema and the country are in grief at the death of veteran actor, director, and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, who died at the age of 87 on April 4, 2025.
Kumar, affectionately referred to as "Bharat Kumar" due to his role in patriotic films, passed away at 4:03 am at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai.
His son, Kunal Goswami, has confirmed that his last rites will be held on April 5, 2025, at 11 am at Pawan Hans in Vile Parle.
The country has been inundated with tributes, with leaders across all walks of life mourning his death.
President Droupadi Murmu turned to social media to recall the legendary actor, saying, "His cinema will instil national pride and inspire generations to come."
She credited Kumar for the talent of infusing patriotism and Indian values into his work, appreciating his memorable depictions of national icons, soldiers, and farmers.
Politicians across party lines, including Rahul Gandhi of the Congress, AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal, and Uttarakhand and Rajasthan Chief Ministers, posted heartfelt messages, noting Kumar's enduring legacy.

AAP Convenor Arvind Kejriwal saddened himself by penning, "Sad news of passing away of renowned Bollywood actor Shri Manoj Kumar ji, known fondly as Bharat Kumar. He has left an everlasting impression in the film world with his incredible acting and patriotism. God give peace to his soul and provide strength to his family and fans to overcome this loss."
Earlier on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled Kumar's death, terming him "an icon of Indian cinema" whose films instilled a sense of national pride. "His films will inspire generations," PM Modi wrote.
Manoj Kumar's cousin Manish R Goswami termed him "a true countryman" whose films revolved around India's national values.
The actor's death was caused by cardiogenic shock due to an acute myocardial infarction, aggravated by decompensated liver cirrhosis. He has been undergoing medical treatment since February 2025.
Popular for movies such as Upkaar, Purab Aur Paschim, and Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, Kumar's filmography stands the test of time, with his films still evoking a connection with the audience.
He was the recipient of several accolades such as the Padma Shri in 1992 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015, as a testament to his position among the most well-revered cine personalities in India.
