Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday said that technology-driven initiatives and organic farming practices will be central to strengthening the rural economy of the Union Territory. He made the remarks while inaugurating the 11th edition of the annual GONGUL festival at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), Srinagar.
Addressing farmers, students and agricultural experts, the Chief Minister emphasized that the government is prioritising rural development by focusing on key sectors such as agriculture, horticulture, livestock, fisheries, floriculture and dairy. He noted that these sectors have received special attention in the recent budget, reflecting the administration’s commitment to improving rural livelihoods.
Abdullah highlighted the role of institutions like SKUAST Jammu and SKUAST Kashmir in helping farmers adopt modern, technology-based and organic farming techniques. He said the use of innovative tools, improved irrigation systems and scientific storage facilities is enhancing both productivity and quality. According to him, such advancements are essential to make local produce more competitive in national and global markets.
Referring to the importance of the GONGUL festival, the Chief Minister said the event provides a valuable platform for farmers to learn about new agricultural technologies and innovations. He particularly stressed the need to improve the quality of horticulture products such as apples, walnuts and almonds to compete with imported goods.
Expressing concern over duty-free imports, Abdullah said cheaper foreign produce often impacts local growers. However, he added that Controlled Atmosphere (CA) storage facilities and better post-harvest management systems are helping farmers reduce losses and maintain quality.
He also praised young innovators and students who showcased technology-based farming solutions, underlining the vital role of universities in driving agricultural transformation across Jammu and Kashmir.
