In a significant political development ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, estranged cousins Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray have announced a formal alliance between the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). The reunion, coming after nearly two decades of political separation, is set to reshape Mumbai’s political landscape with a renewed focus on Marathi identity.
Addressing a joint press conference in Mumbai, MNS chief Raj Thackeray declared that the two parties would contest the January 15 civic polls together. He asserted that Mumbai would get a “Marathi mayor” from the Shiv Sena–MNS alliance, striking an assertive tone aimed at consolidating regional sentiment. Uddhav Thackeray, seated alongside him, echoed the confidence, stating that Mumbai would remain firmly with their alliance.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) chief invoked the slogan “Batenge toh katenge,” popularised by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, to underline the risks of political division. Both leaders framed their partnership as a return to the ideological roots laid down by Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray, where the interests and identity of Marathi-speaking people formed the core political plank.
Sources indicate that seat-sharing arrangements have largely been finalised. The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena is expected to contest around 145–150 seats, while the MNS may field candidates in 65–70 wards. The Sharad Pawar-led NCP faction is also likely to join the alliance, contesting a smaller number of seats.
The alliance is seen as a strategic move to counter the ruling Mahayuti coalition, particularly the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction and the BJP. Political observers believe Uddhav Thackeray brings legacy support and sympathy among traditional Sena voters, while Raj Thackeray adds aggressive campaigning style and youth appeal.
With BMC elections due within weeks, the Thackeray reunion shifts the narrative from disputes over the “real Sena” to a broader assertion of the Thackeray legacy. The coming weeks are expected to witness an intense campaign as Mumbai heads into one of its most closely watched civic battles in recent years.
